LeBron James Accepts Secondary Role as Lakers Lean on Luka Doncic

LeBron James acknowledged that, for the first time in his career, he is adapting his game around a younger teammate as the Lakers center their offense on 26-year-old Luka Doncic. “Luka is our franchise,” James told reporters, adding that the rest of the roster must adjust to Doncic’s strengths as a pick-and-roll creator and shot-maker.
Although James’ season averages are among his lowest since his rookie year, the 41-year-old forward has recently found better rhythm. He emphasized that both he and Doncic must set the tone in a crowded Western Conference race. “It is going to start with me and Luka, for sure,” James said. “We have to make sure we are putting our guys in position offensively, and then defensively.”
James also cautioned fans about his workload down the stretch. “Every back-to-back, for the rest of the season, is TBD,” he said. “I got the most minutes in NBA history. Bank that answer right now.”
Doncic’s Perspective
Doncic praised James’ impact, calling his veteran teammate “absolutely amazing” for his efficiency and guidance. The duo’s progress stalled recently with consecutive losses to San Antonio and Milwaukee. Against the Bucks, James went scoreless over the final three minutes and committed a late turnover, while Doncic fouled out with 16.2 seconds remaining in a tie game. Head coach JJ Redick noted that Doncic “didn’t have his best stuff,” but expressed no long-term concern.
Hachimura Nearing Return
Forward Rui Hachimura practiced fully on Sunday and is expected to play Tuesday under a minutes restriction, Redick said. Hachimura will come off the bench initially; his status as a starter will be revisited once the restriction is lifted.
Trade Deadline Outlook
League executives cited by ESPN reporters Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst view the Lakers’ hunt for a two-way wing as emblematic of a potentially quiet trade deadline. According to one anonymous executive, the club may wait until the offseason because limited assets make significant additions unlikely.
