The Dallas Mavericks announced Friday that forward Anthony Davis sustained ligament damage in his left hand, an injury that may require surgery and could keep him off the court for several months, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Team and league sources said the injury occurred late in Thursday night’s road loss to the Utah Jazz when Davis tried to stop Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. Davis, 32, is expected to seek additional medical opinions before determining whether to undergo surgery.

If doctors clear a nonsurgical treatment plan, the 10-time All-Star would still be out a minimum of six weeks, sources said.

The Mavericks have been actively gauging trade interest in Davis ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline. Front-office discussions have been complicated by the forward’s recent injury history and his stated intention to pursue a substantial contract extension this offseason. Davis is owed $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28.

Since arriving in Dallas in early February 2025 as the centerpiece of the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, injuries have limited Davis to 29 regular-season games and two play-in appearances. He was rehabbing an abdominal strain when the trade was completed, then strained an adductor in his Mavericks debut and missed the next six weeks.

This season, Davis sat out 14 games in November with a left-calf strain, an absence that extended because team governor Patrick Dumont insisted on comprehensive medical clearance before reinstatement. He then missed two additional games after a minor adductor strain suffered during the Mavericks’ Christmas Day loss to the Golden State Warriors.

In 20 appearances this season, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.
