The NBA’s first major transaction of the season arrived one month ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline, as the Atlanta Hawks sent All-Star guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for guard CJ McCollum and forward Corey Kispert, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

The move ends a brief but eventful chapter in Atlanta. Young, 25, propelled the Hawks to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals less than five years ago, but the club has since endured early postseason exits and struggled to build a balanced roster around his high-usage style.

This season, the Hawks were 2-8 in Young’s 10 appearances, and their net rating without him is the best it has been during his tenure. By moving his contract, Atlanta removes a looming $49 million player option and lowers every remaining salary on the books to $31 million or less, creating new financial flexibility.

McCollum, 32, provides an immediate shot-creation boost, particularly for second units that have faltered whenever neither Young nor forward Jalen Johnson was available. Kispert, 24, adds long-range shooting and is signed long term, giving Atlanta a controllable asset as it reshapes its roster.

Washington, meanwhile, shifts from patient rebuilding to aggressive acceleration. Young becomes the Wizards’ primary offensive engine and their most dynamic pick-and-roll threat since prime John Wall. Although his ball-dominant style will require adjustments from the team’s young core, the Wizards possess both salary-cap space and time to evaluate the fit.

The trade represents a starting point, not a conclusion, for both franchises as they navigate the remainder of the season and beyond.
