NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Pelicans have elevated Joe Barrer to head coach of their NBA G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Barrer, 38, has spent close to a decade in the G League. He began his professional career as a video coordinator and assistant coach with the Iowa Wolves, then known as the Iowa Energy. From 2017–21, he served as an assistant for the Orlando Magic’s G League team before taking over that club’s top job for the 2021–23 seasons.
The Iowa native joined the Squadron as an assistant coach in 2023 and held that post for two years. His promotion comes after former Birmingham head coach T.J. Saint departed this offseason to join Mike Brown’s staff with the New York Knicks.
Barrer will guide the Squadron beginning with the 2025–26 G League campaign.
