CLEVELAND — Riding a three-game winning streak, the Cleveland Cavaliers host the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons in a mid-January matchup that could gauge the team’s recent surge. Cleveland defeated Detroit 116-95 on Oct. 27, when Donovan Mitchell poured in 35 points in 29 minutes. Mitchell enters the rematch averaging 29.8 points per game, while teammates Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are expected to shoulder key defensive and rebounding duties against the Pistons’ depth and size.
PHOENIX — Suns guard Grayson Allen moved closer to returning from a right knee injury after completing five-on-five work Thursday, head coach Jordan Ott said. Allen has missed eight consecutive games and is slated for another full-contact session before the medical staff clears him to play.
CHICAGO — Backcourt injuries have pushed veteran point guard Tre Jones into the Bulls’ starting lineup, and he responded with 20 points and 12 assists in Wednesday’s win over New Orleans. Chicago acquired Jones from San Antonio at last season’s trade deadline. He is under contract for $8 million next year, with a team option for the 2027-28 season.
