An MRI performed Thursday confirmed that San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama did not sustain ligament damage in his hyperextended left knee, according to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.

The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s two-point victory over the New York Knicks. The 7-foot-4 rookie did not travel with the team and has been ruled out of Friday’s matchup in Indianapolis. He is expected to be listed as questionable for Saturday’s home game against the Portland Trail Blazers and is considered day-to-day.

Wembanyama is officially diagnosed with left knee soreness and hopes to return within the next week, The Athletic’s Jared Weiss reported. Friday’s contest will mark his 13th absence this season; he previously missed time with a calf strain.

Speaking to Maxime Aubin of French outlet L’Équipe on Thursday night, Wembanyama said he has “no issue” with the NBA’s 65-game eligibility rule for major postseason awards, adding that he trusts the Spurs’ medical staff to remain objective in their decision-making.

The Spurs will also be without starting wing Devin Vassell on Friday. Vassell is expected to miss multiple games because of a left adductor strain, Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News reported.
