LOS ANGELES — Rui Hachimura remains convinced the Los Angeles Lakers will rebound from their current three-game losing streak, pointing to a blunt team meeting and renewed emphasis on defense as catalysts for change.
Head coach JJ Redick kept Hachimura in the starting five alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, LeBron James and Deandre Ayton, prioritizing offense over a more defensive-minded option such as Marcus Smart. While the lineup has produced points, it has struggled to string together stops, a weakness Redick highlighted during an “uncomfortable” practice that included an extensive film session.
“It’s on all of us,” Hachimura said after the workout. “Players, coaches—everyone has to tighten up. We had a good stretch to start the season, then we relaxed and stopped doing what we’re supposed to do.”
The Lakers dropped their last three contests at Crypto.com Arena and face another cluster of home games in the coming weeks. Hachimura called protecting home court “non-negotiable.”
“Of course we can turn it around,” he added. “We just need to reset. I’ve been in the league seven years—teams hit rough patches. We just can’t let it last longer than it should.”
Personal focus on energy and rebounding
The 6-foot-8 forward acknowledged he must contribute more than secondary scoring, singling out offensive rebounding, transition defense and physicality as areas he can improve.
“I’m not the most vocal guy, but I can bring energy,” Hachimura said. “Going to the glass, getting back on defense—little things help the team. Whatever’s necessary to win, I’m willing to do.”
The Lakers aim to reestablish the defensive cohesion that fueled their early success as they continue their push toward championship contention.
