MINNEAPOLIS — Cam Thomas marked his first appearance in six weeks by delivering 30 points in just under 20 minutes, powering the Brooklyn Nets to a 123-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.
Thomas had missed 20 games with a strained left hamstring. The guard sparked a decisive surge in the third quarter, netting 12 consecutive Brooklyn points — capped by back-to-back three-pointers — to turn an 82-all tie into an 89-82 lead.
Michael Porter Jr. supported the effort with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while six Nets reached double figures. Brooklyn (10-19) has now won four of its past five outings and five of its last seven, moving to 7-3 in December. The club is allowing an NBA-low 103.1 points per game this month.
Anthony Edwards finished with 28 points for Minnesota (20-12), which dropped consecutive games for the third time this season after a 142-138 overtime loss in Denver on Thursday. Jaden McDaniels added 16 points, with Naz Reid and Julius Randle scoring 13 apiece as five Timberwolves hit double digits.
Day’Ron Sharpe supplied six of Brooklyn’s final eight points in the third quarter, creating a 98-86 cushion. A pull-up jumper by Thomas and four quick points from Danny Wolf opened the fourth period, stretching the margin to 104-86. Porter’s three-pointer with 1:57 remaining pushed the lead to 120-102.
Porter is averaging 28.4 points on 51.1% shooting in December, including 46.7% from beyond the arc, along with 7.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. For the season, Thomas is averaging 22.3 points on 42.2% shooting through nine contests.
Timberwolves guard Terrence Shannon Jr., who left Thursday’s matchup in Denver, underwent an MRI that revealed a left foot strain. The team said he will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
