Nets Notes: Porter, Trade Possibilities, Demin, Traore

Brooklyn’s front office is considering moving forward Michael Porter Jr. as the organization stays committed to maximizing its 2026 first-round draft position, according to multiple reports.

Porter, acquired from Denver during the offseason, erupted for 28 points in Tuesday’s victory in Philadelphia. While the scoring surge has boosted the Nets’ offense, it runs counter to owner Joe Tsai’s stated goal of improving lottery odds. Sources told The New York Post that the club’s philosophy has not shifted, leaving two options on the table: trade Porter or eventually sideline him.

The 27-year-old carries an extensive injury history—three back surgeries, herniated discs, a damaged peroneal nerve, and foot drop that requires a brace—and is owed $40.8 million next season. Contending teams could see more value in Porter than Brooklyn, which is retooling.

Potential landing spots

The Pistons and Bucks have surfaced as possible partners. Detroit could send a future first-round pick, Tobias Harris’ $26.6 million expiring contract, and an additional piece such as Caris LeVert, Ron Holland, or Jaden Ivey. Milwaukee, meanwhile, is eligible to part with a 2031 or 2032 first-rounder along with Kyle Kuzma and Bobby Portis.

A separate scenario involves the Clippers. A proposed package would deliver Porter and guard Cam Thomas to Los Angeles for an unprotected 2032 first-round selection, forward John Collins, and guard Bogdan Bogdanovic. A source said owner Steve Ballmer remains intent on salvaging the season rather than entering any form of rebuild.

Rookies making strides

First-round pick Egor Demin continues to impress head coach Jordi Fernandez. The 6-8 guard posted 20 points, five assists, and two rebounds in Tuesday’s win, his sixth game with at least four made three-pointers—second-most among rookies. “He does a great job finding the three-point line for his teammates and shooting the three himself, but he’s done a much better job being aggressive getting into the paint,” Fernandez said.

Fellow rookie Nolan Traore, 19, added eight points in Sunday’s victory over Toronto after spending most of the season with G League affiliate Long Island. Fernandez praised the French point guard’s confidence and development, noting that extended minutes in the G League have accelerated his growth.
