Los Angeles, CA — Lakers guard Luka Doncic delivered a playful warning to the Houston Rockets two days before their Christmas Day matchup at Crypto.com Arena, promising “big gifts and tough Ls” in a short promotional video posted on Dec. 23.
In the clip, shared by the NBA Retweet account on X, Doncic is asked what message he has for Houston and responds that the Lakers plan to hand out presents and losses, all while wearing a holiday-themed filter. The light-hearted exchange is part of the league’s push to spotlight its annual Christmas schedule, which features Los Angeles hosting Houston in prime time.
Whether Doncic will be on the floor remains uncertain. The 26-year-old is listed as day-to-day with a leg contusion after several in-game collisions this season. Head coach JJ Redick said the team is evaluating ways to keep the All-NBA guard healthy for the long haul.
Even if Doncic plays, Los Angeles expects a demanding test. Houston’s size, length and athleticism have bothered opponents all year, and the Rockets possess multiple defenders capable of rotating onto Doncic to wear him down. The Lakers dropped their last game to the Phoenix Suns with Doncic sidelined, heightening local hopes that he can suit up for the holiday showcase.
Redick added that he is encouraged by Doncic’s willingness to operate off the ball alongside LeBron James, giving the Lakers’ offense added versatility. Doncic’s offseason conditioning work has also allowed him to play faster and remain fresh late in games, one reason Los Angeles remains firmly in the Western Conference race.
The Lakers and Rockets tip off on Dec. 25 in what has become a staple of the NBA’s Christmas lineup. Los Angeles owns a long history of holiday appearances, while Houston seeks to spoil the festive atmosphere with a road victory.
