Wizards’ Cam Whitmore sidelined indefinitely with upper-extremity blood clot

Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore will be out for an undetermined period after doctors discovered upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team announced on Dec. 23, 2025.
The 21-year-old had missed the club’s past two games because of shoulder soreness. Subsequent testing revealed a blood clot, leading to his immediate removal from basketball activities.
Selected 20th overall in the 2023 NBA draft, Whitmore spent his first two seasons with the Houston Rockets, averaging 10.8 points per game. According to ESPN Research, he produced 0.46 points per touch last season, the fourth-best mark among players with at least 1,000 touches.
A native of Maryland, Whitmore was acquired by Washington in July in exchange for two second-round picks, a move designed to expand his role on a rebuilding roster. He had recently begun intensive development work with head coach Brian Keefe.
Deep vein thrombosis has affected several high-profile NBA players in recent years. Spurs center Victor Wembanyama was limited to 46 games last season, while Damian Lillard’s campaign with the Portland Trail Blazers ended early in the spring; both were later cleared to return. The condition also sidelined Detroit’s Ausar Thompson last year and led to surgery for Brandon Ingram in 2019 when he played for the Lakers.
