Kings Keeping Close Watch on Darius Garland’s Situation

The Sacramento Kings are tracking Darius Garland’s status in Cleveland amid league-wide curiosity about the two-time All-Star’s future, according to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Afseth reports that the Cavaliers have declined trade overtures for Garland so far, yet several clubs are monitoring him should Cleveland’s stance shift. The Kings, who have been searching for a long-term answer at point guard for months, are among the most attentive observers. The Minnesota Timberwolves are also said to be in the market for a lead ball-handler.

Putting together a compelling trade package could prove challenging for either team. Afseth notes that both Minnesota and Cleveland face luxury-tax apron restrictions, making a deal especially complicated.

Rival executives believe Garland might be interested in a larger offensive role than the one he shares with Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. One source told Afseth that teams regard Garland as the “safest” option among high-profile point guards rumored to be available, a group that includes Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball and Trae Young.

Injuries have slowed the 25-year-old this season. Garland missed the first seven games after offseason toe surgery, aggravated the same injury shortly after returning and sat out five more contests. Over his first 12 appearances he struggled to reach his usual level, visibly hampered by the toe issue.

Signs of improvement emerged when Garland erupted for 35 points and eight assists in a loss last Saturday with Mitchell sidelined by illness. Two nights later, he delivered 27 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and two steals in a win over Charlotte with Mitchell back in the lineup.

Despite external interest, Cavs insider Chris Fedor expressed doubt on the Wine and Gold Talk podcast that Cleveland will move Garland before the February 5 trade deadline. Fedor cited the organization’s high valuation of the guard and the likelihood that injury concerns would suppress offers.
