Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick offered a concise description of the attributes he wants from the team’s role players, saying they must “defend and shoot threes.”
Redick made the remark on December 16, 2025, when asked by The Athletic reporter Dan Woike about the best way to complement stars Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves. The three playmakers have driven Los Angeles’ offense, and Redick emphasized that effective support hinges on perimeter defense and reliable outside shooting.
“It depends on what the star player does well,” Redick said. “Defend and shoot threes.”
The Lakers have alternated between strong and uneven performances from their bench. Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht and Gabe Vincent have contributed primarily on offense, while Marcus Smart, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia have supplied defense but struggled with consistent perimeter accuracy.
Redick’s comments follow the organization’s ongoing search for young 3-and-D wings on the trade market, a pursuit that aligns with the coach’s stated priorities. Although the season remains in its early months, the front office and coaching staff continue to evaluate ways to balance the roster around Doncic, James and Reaves.
The Lakers last appeared on December 7, 2025, when Redick coached from the sideline during a road contest against the Philadelphia 76ers at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
