The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to appoint Portland Trail Blazers head video coordinator Eli Kell-Abrams as the new head coach of the Cleveland Charge, the team’s NBA G League affiliate, HoopsHype insider Michael Scotto reported.
Kell-Abrams, 30, has served as Portland’s head video coordinator for the past two seasons. Before joining the Trail Blazers, he held the same position with the Philadelphia 76ers for two years after earlier stints as an assistant video coordinator and video intern with the Miami Heat.
His résumé also includes sideline experience outside the NBA. Kell-Abrams was an assistant coach at Saint Thomas Aquinas College during the 2017-18 season and a graduate assistant coach at the University of Miami from 2015-17.
The Brooklyn native was a four-year starting point guard at Emerson College, where he earned GNAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2012. He helped lead the Lions to NCAA Tournament bids in 2016 and 2017, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2016.
He inherits a Charge squad that finished last season 16-18, placing 11th in the G League’s Eastern Conference.
