New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson took part in practice on Saturday and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s road game against the Chicago Bulls, head coach James Borrego told reporters.
The update comes only 11 days after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Williamson was expected to miss at least three weeks because of a Grade 2 strain of his right adductor. At that time, the Pelicans declined to set a return date, leading to widespread expectations that the injury could sideline him into January. The Athletic even noted last week that some inside the organization believed the 23-year-old would not be back until after the New Year.
Instead, Williamson has already rejoined his teammates on the practice floor and is being considered for game action before mid-December. He has missed the last six contests with the adductor issue and previously sat out eight games in November due to a left hamstring strain.
When available this season, the former No. 1 overall pick has averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals in just under 31 minutes across 10 games. New Orleans is expected to proceed cautiously; being listed as questionable does not guarantee Williamson will play, and any minutes he receives would likely be closely monitored.
For a club that has spent much of the early campaign without its star forward, simply having Williamson back in uniform consideration marks a step forward.
