The NBA’s summer activity is in full swing following the Finals and the 2025 draft, headlined by a blockbuster that sends 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets in the league’s first seven-team trade. The transaction also moves center Clint Capela from Atlanta back to Houston in a sign-and-trade.
Front offices are closely monitoring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee, though no trade request has been made. Meanwhile, salary figures for 2025-26 are set: the cap at $154.647 million, the tax at $187.895 million, the first apron at $195.945 million and the second apron at $207.824 million.
Key roster moves
Memphis–Orlando trade: The Grizzlies sent Desmond Bane to the Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one pick swap, launching trade season.
Boston adjustments: With Jayson Tatum sidelined after left Achilles surgery, the Celtics acquired rookie guard RJ Luis Jr. from Utah for Georges Niang and two future second-rounders, and signed forward Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million deal.
Los Angeles Lakers: After waiving guards Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin, L.A. cleared space for Marcus Smart, who is joining on a two-year, $11 million contract following his buyout in Washington. The club also reached agreements with center Deandre Ayton (two years) and forward Jake LaRavia (two years).
Clippers reload: Twelve-time All-Star Chris Paul chose the LA Clippers for what is expected to be his 21st and final NBA season, and three-time All-Star Bradley Beal plans to sign a two-year, $11 million pact once his Phoenix buyout clears. Center Brook Lopez agreed to a two-year, $18 million deal.
Milwaukee shake-up: The Bucks stretched the remaining $113 million on Damian Lillard’s contract to sign free-agent center Myles Turner to a four-year, $107 million agreement. Milwaukee also added wing Amir Coffey, guard Gary Harris, center Jericho Sims and traded for guard Vasilije Micić while sending Pat Connaughton to Charlotte.
Contract extensions and max deals
Oklahoma City secured MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on a four-year, $285 million supermax and locked up champions Chet Holmgren (five years, up to $250 million) and Jalen Williams (five years, up to $287 million). Phoenix star Devin Booker accepted a two-year, $145 million extension, the highest annual salary in league history.
Elsewhere, Orlando’s Paolo Banchero and New Orleans’ Herbert Jones both signed five-year extensions that could reach $287 million and $97 million, respectively, while Toronto center Jakob Poeltl added three years and $84.5 million onto his current deal.
Coaching news
The New York Knicks continue their coaching search after adding Frank Vogel to Dallas’ staff as lead assistant; former Kings coach Mike Brown has received a second interview with New York.
Teams are expected to keep reshaping rosters throughout the summer as executives navigate the new cap thresholds and prepare for the 2025-26 campaign.
