Giannis Antetokounmpo, representatives weighing Bucks future amid early-season slide

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, are engaged in ongoing discussions with the franchise about the two-time NBA MVP’s long-term plans, according to sources familiar with the talks.

The conversations, described as active and detailed, are expected to lead to a resolution within the next few weeks. That timeline would clarify whether Antetokounmpo could become available before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, the sources said.

Prior to the season, the 31-year-old forward signaled he would use the Bucks’ first 25 or so games as a measuring stick. Milwaukee has stumbled to a 9-13 record—losing eight of its past nine contests—and sits 11th in the Eastern Conference, circumstances multiple sources characterized as frustrating for the player, coaching staff and front office.

One person with direct knowledge of the situation said “the writing is on the wall” unless the club’s fortunes change dramatically.

Knicks no longer sole option

During the offseason, Antetokounmpo explored the possibility of a move to the New York Knicks in what sources described as an exclusive, multi-week negotiating window in August. That scenario is no longer exclusive; several teams are expected to pursue the nine-time All-Star if Milwaukee opens trade talks.

Extension looming

Antetokounmpo becomes eligible on Oct. 1, 2026, for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension that would run through the 2030-31 season. Should he be traded, he could sign the same deal with a new team six months after the transaction.

Performance impact

Milwaukee began the campaign 4-1 but has struggled to maintain that level, particularly during Antetokounmpo’s recent four-game absence with a groin injury. The Bucks went 0-4 without him and are 1-5 overall in games he has missed. Even with the forward back, the team is 1-2 in its past three outings, including Monday’s loss to the then 2-16 Washington Wizards.

Statistically, Milwaukee averages 126.9 points per 100 possessions when Antetokounmpo is on the floor—good enough to lead the league—but just 107.7 when he sits, a figure that would rank near the bottom of the NBA.

Through 22 appearances, Antetokounmpo is averaging 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists while shooting 64% from the field.

During training camp, he acknowledged the lure of joining another contender yet reiterated his commitment to Milwaukee, adding that it would be “human to change his mind.” The Bucks entered the season believing a strong start would quiet trade speculation; their current slide has instead intensified scrutiny as the calendar approaches the league’s trade deadline.

Further developments are expected as the internal dialogue continues ahead of February’s decision point.
