The Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to open the 2025/26 season with just 14 standard contracts because of their proximity to the second tax apron, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Timberwolves roster moves

Minnesota has investigated several veteran guards—Cameron Payne, Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet—but indications are that Bones Hyland will claim the final roster slot. Hyland spent last season on a two-way deal with the Wolves and appeared in four games. President of basketball operations Tim Connelly originally selected Hyland in the first round of the 2021 draft while with Denver.

Training-camp invitee Johnny Juzang faces long odds to make the club, though Krawczynski notes Luka Garza earned a spot under similar circumstances a year ago. Young players Jaylen Clark, Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr. are expected to see expanded roles.

Trail Blazers sale agreement

A consortium led by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has reached an agreement to purchase the Portland Trail Blazers. The group includes Sheel Tyle, co-CEO of Collective Global and spouse of Oregon Health Authority director Dr. Sejal Hathi. Tyle’s local connections were cited as a key factor in the bid, reports Sean Highkin of Rose Garden Report.

Rockets take their time on Kevin Durant

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on NBA Today that Houston sees no urgency to finalize a maximum extension for Kevin Durant. The Rockets are focusing on other business, including a possible new deal for Tari Eason. “Kevin Durant is their best player; he’s not necessarily their priority,” MacMahon stated, emphasizing Houston’s desire to maintain long-term flexibility.

Suns’ playoff hopes uncertain

The Phoenix Suns sit 11th in Gerald Bourguet’s Western Conference power rankings for PHNX Sports, placing them just outside the projected playoff field. Phoenix overhauled its depth chart after trading Durant and waiving Bradley Beal, acquiring Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams in a series of deals.
