New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has been diagnosed with a right adductor strain and will be sidelined for at least three weeks, the club will re-evaluate him at that point, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The 25-year-old All-Star has struggled to stay on the floor since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. Earlier this season he sat out eight games with a Grade 1 strain in his left hamstring; Charania reports the groin-related injury is expected to keep him out considerably longer than that earlier absence.

It is not yet known when the adductor issue occurred. Williamson’s most recent appearance came Saturday in Golden State, a game the Pelicans lost. In 10 outings this season he is averaging 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals while logging 30.9 minutes per contest.

In four of his first six full NBA seasons, Williamson has been limited to 30 games or fewer, including the entire 2021/22 campaign, due to a variety of injuries. The Pelicans’ injury list has been extensive again this fall; all five of the team’s highest-paid players, and seven players overall, were unavailable Sunday. Williamson, on a maximum-salary contract, was held out of the second night of that back-to-back.

The Pelicans did not announce a firm timetable beyond the three-week re-evaluation window.
