LOS ANGELES — The New Orleans Pelicans will face the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday without seven players, including their five highest-paid, according to the team’s latest injury report released November 30.
All-Star forward Zion Williamson is sitting out the second game of a back-to-back for “left hamstring injury management” after missing eight contests earlier this month with a Grade 1 strain. Guard Dejounte Murray (right Achilles rupture), guard Jordan Poole (left quad strain), forward Karl Matkovic (right calf strain) and forward Herbert Jones (unspecified injury) remain unavailable. Rookie guard Jordan Hawkins will miss a second straight game because of illness, while forward Trey Murphy III is out with right elbow soreness.
Young wings embrace larger roles
With Jones sidelined, rookie second-round pick Micah Peavy and two-way wing Bryce McGowens have taken on primary defensive assignments, head coach James Borrego told reporters. Peavy logged 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals in 20 minutes during Monday’s loss, saying he hopes to mirror Jones’s reputation as a stopper. Peavy signed a multiyear standard contract after being drafted 40th overall in June.
Borrego stressing process over results
The Pelicans are 1-7 since Borrego replaced Willie Green, who was dismissed after a 2-10 start. Despite the record, Borrego said the club is “getting closer” to establishing a clear identity, emphasizing shot selection and defensive consistency. Williamson praised the interim coach’s efforts, noting that both players and staff “are behind him.”
The Pelicans entered Sunday at 3-17 overall.
