LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers have ruled out LeBron James for Sunday’s matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans as the 40-year-old forward manages a left foot issue.

Sunday’s contest is the opening leg of a home back-to-back that continues Monday against the Phoenix Suns. Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, James’ longtime agent, told ESPN last week he prefers the four-time MVP avoid consecutive-day appearances to protect his health during a record 23rd NBA season.

James missed the season’s first 14 games because of sciatica affecting his lower back and right side, and he dealt with left foot problems last year. Since returning, he is averaging 16.5 points, 8.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds over four games, all Lakers victories.

The Lakers will also be without guard Marcus Smart for a second straight game due to back spasms.
