INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington was scratched minutes before tipoff Saturday night after spraining his right ankle during pregame warmups against the LA Clippers.
Team staff said Washington landed on a loose basketball while going through shooting drills, forcing an immediate change to the starting lineup. He was officially ruled out midway through the first quarter.
The setback adds to a thinning Dallas frontcourt. Anthony Davis missed the contest, the second half of a back-to-back, as the club manages his return from a month-long layoff caused by a left calf strain. Daniel Gafford remained out for right ankle injury management after first spraining it on the opening day of training camp, and Dereck Lively II did not travel as he undergoes evaluation for swelling in his surgically repaired right foot.
Washington entered the night averaging career bests of 16.0 points and 7.8 rebounds.
