Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum continues to make visible strides in his recovery from the Achilles injury that ended his postseason, teammates told The Boston Globe. The 27-year-old forward has said he hopes to return before the 2025-26 regular season ends, though the organization has not offered a timetable.
Forward Sam Hauser praised Tatum’s commitment, noting that the five-time All-Star remains active in meetings and workouts. “He’s staying mentally, physically, emotionally prepared,” Hauser said. “His presence is still felt even though he’s not out there with us.”
During media-available portions of recent practices, Tatum has taken part in shooting drills that include off-the-dribble moves and changes of direction. Observers reported no outward signs of restriction.
Williams answers emergency call
The Celtics’ partnership with their G League affiliate in Maine paid off on Wednesday when two-way center Amari Williams logged 15 minutes in a win over Detroit. Prior to the game, the rookie had appeared for only seven NBA minutes. Pressed into action with Neemias Queta sidelined by an ankle injury, Williams recorded one point, three rebounds and two blocks.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla credited the G League staff for preparing Williams to slide seamlessly into the rotation. “The ability for a guy to step right in and know the plays, know the coverages … is a testament to the alignment,” Mazzulla said.
Return to familiar ground
Saturday’s matchup in Minneapolis doubled as a homecoming for forwards Josh Minott and Luka Garza, both of whom spent multiple seasons with the Timberwolves before signing with Boston last summer. “A great environment, great group of people,” Minott said of his time in Minnesota. “I don’t think anybody in this city would say I left on a sour note.”
Contract pieces for potential trade
In a mailbag column for MassLive, Brian Robb wrote that the contracts of Hauser and guard Anfernee Simons could be pivotal if Boston pursues a center before the trade deadline. Robb noted the Celtics may be willing to exchange Simons’ expiring deal for a player on a longer contract to preserve a movable salary slot for the offseason.
