Duncan Robinson will step onto the Kaseya Center floor Saturday night wearing a Detroit Pistons jersey, marking his first appearance in Miami since leaving the Heat after seven seasons.
“I’m excited. It’s definitely going to be fun, but weird,” Robinson told the Detroit News. “I have so much rhythm and flow from being on the other side of that building. It’s going to be interesting, but I’m excited to try to get a win with this group.”
Off-season move to Detroit
The 31-year-old guard joined Detroit in July through a sign-and-trade deal. He terminated the final season of his Heat contract—worth $19.9 million and partially guaranteed for $9.9 million—to enter free agency. The Pistons signed him to a three-year, $48 million contract that is partially guaranteed in Year 2 and non-guaranteed in Year 3.
Early production with the Pistons
Robinson has started all 19 games for Detroit, averaging 12.3 points while shooting 40.6 percent from three-point range. “We’re still building synergy on both sides of the ball,” he said. “Individually, I want to become more comfortable, be aggressive and find my spots.”
Heat memories and record
Robinson holds Miami’s franchise record with 1,202 made three-pointers. He credited the organization’s culture for his development. “Heat culture is all about maximizing every day and taking advantage of every opportunity,” he said, adding that he benefitted from the stability provided by team president Pat Riley.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, who still follows Robinson’s games, called his former player “one of the great success stories from our building.” Spoelstra noted Robinson’s path from Division III basketball to the NBA and said the story “eventually could be a book, a movie.”
Before tipoff Saturday, the Heat plan to play a tribute video honoring Robinson’s tenure with the club.
