Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez has removed forward Ziaire Williams from the active rotation, a move he believes can unlock the 23-year-old’s untapped defensive upside, the New York Post reported.
Fernandez, in his first season guiding the Nets, told the newspaper the benching is intended as a short-term measure to “spark” Williams’ commitment on the less glamorous end of the floor. The coach emphasized that the former first-round pick will have opportunities to reclaim minutes once he demonstrates consistent defensive intensity in practice and games.
Williams, acquired by Brooklyn earlier this year, has averaged modest numbers in limited action. Fernandez said the wing’s length and athleticism give him the tools to become a high-impact defender, but added that greater focus and effort are required for him to realize that potential.
The Nets have oscillated around the .500 mark to start the 2025-26 campaign and rank near the middle of the league in defensive rating. Fernandez indicated that sharpening the team’s perimeter resistance is a priority, and challenging Williams publicly is part of that strategy.
No timetable was offered for Williams’ return to regular playing time. Fernandez noted that internal competition will dictate future rotations.
