Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. issued a stark warning about the perils of sports gambling on Tuesday, August 13, 2025, while his brother deals with ongoing legal problems linked to wagering.
Speaking to reporters, Porter said recent events involving his family show “how quickly everything can change” when betting becomes part of an athlete’s life. He urged fellow players and fans to stay away from improper gambling activity, calling the possible consequences “scary.”
Porter’s comments come as one of his brothers faces unspecified legal charges connected to sports betting. Although Porter did not discuss case details, he stressed that the situation has been “a hard lesson” for the entire family.
The Nuggets forward added that league rules exist “for a reason” and said anyone involved in professional sports should think carefully before placing a wager. “You could lose your career, your freedom, or both,” Porter told reporters.
The NBA prohibits players, coaches and team personnel from betting on the league or sharing inside information. Violations can lead to suspensions, bans or criminal prosecution.
Porter, 27, is entering his seventh NBA season and is coming off a career-best year in Denver. He said his focus remains on basketball but felt compelled to speak after watching his brother’s legal troubles unfold. “If my words keep even one person from making a bad choice,” he said, “then it’s worth it.”
