Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban says the organization has no plans to trade Anthony Davis, pushing back against a report that the club intends to gauge the market for the 10-time All-Star.
Hours after ESPN’s Tim MacMahon wrote that multiple team sources expect Dallas to explore possible deals, Cuban emailed The Athletic’s Joe Vardon with a brief response when asked if the Mavericks might move Davis this season: “We won’t. We want to try to win.”
Cuban remains part of the franchise’s basketball brain trust, though final authority rests with team governor Patrick Dumont. Whether Cuban’s position holds if the 4-11 Mavericks continue to struggle ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline is still uncertain.
Long-term pivot under discussion
MacMahon’s earlier report indicated that Dallas is considering a long-range plan centered on 18-year-old Cooper Flagg, this year’s No. 1 overall pick and viewed by the team as its primary building block. How far that strategy extends toward moving established veterans such as Davis has not been determined.
Davis’ impact and availability
Since arriving in last season’s blockbuster swap that sent Luka Doncic to another team, Davis has appeared in just 25 of 48 regular-season games. The forward is currently sidelined with a left calf strain; the Mavericks said Sunday he will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days. Dumont has reportedly instructed medical staff to take a conservative approach to avoid additional setbacks.
Contract considerations
Davis, who turns 33 in March, is earning $54.1 million this season and $58.5 million in 2025-26, with a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. He will be eligible for another extension this summer. Despite his injury history, league observers expect substantial interest should Dallas ultimately invite offers.
For now, Cuban’s public stance is clear: the Mavericks are committed to keeping their star big man as they attempt to climb back into contention.
