LOS ANGELES — LeBron James will return to the court on Tuesday when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Utah Jazz, league sources told ESPN.
The 40-year-old forward missed the first 14 games with sciatica that affected his lower back and the right side of his body. Tuesday’s appearance will mark the start of his NBA-record 23rd season.
James practiced with the Lakers on Monday, his first full five-on-five session with the team since Los Angeles was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of last season’s playoffs in April. Last week he spent time with the G League’s South Bay Lakers while the NBA club was on a five-game trip, completing consecutive practice days without experiencing soreness.
Already the league’s all-time scoring leader, James begins the season 50 games short of Robert Parish’s career record for games played. He is 508 assists shy of Jason Kidd for third place on the all-time assists list and needs one three-pointer to pass Reggie Miller for sixth on the career three-pointers chart.
