The Los Angeles Lakers were routed 121-92 by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night at Paycom Center, and guard Luka Doncic left the arena insisting that greater physicality and energy must headline the team’s response.

Doncic Calls for Better Starts

Speaking to Spectrum SportsNet after the defeat, Doncic said the Lakers’ early approach set the tone for the night. “We’ve got to bounce back. We need to get ready for the New Orleans game,” he stated. “They don’t have a great record, but they’re a physical team. We just need to start more physical. When we don’t start physical, it’s tough on us.”

He repeated the message moments later: “Being physical and [bringing] energy—we’ve got to start the game better. I feel like when we start the game sloppy it’s not going to be a great game.”

Although both teams finished even on the glass, Oklahoma City controlled most other effort statistics. The Thunder forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 26 points, while outscoring Los Angeles 48-30 in the paint.

Doncic’s First Quiet Night of Season

Doncic finished with 19 points on 7-of-20 shooting, adding seven rebounds and seven assists but committing four turnovers. Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced the champions with 30 points on 10-of-18 from the floor, handing Los Angeles one of its first significant tests against a Western Conference contender.

Record Still Positive, But Standards Rise

The Lakers dropped to 8-4 after 12 games. While the record remains strong, the lopsided loss prompted Doncic to emphasize setting a tougher tone from the opening tip. “When you start physical, we do a pretty good job playing 48 minutes,” he said. “When you start sloppy, then it’s not our game.”

The club travels next to face the New Orleans Pelicans, a matchup Doncic described as another opportunity to prove the Lakers can open—and sustain—play with the edge he believes they need.
