CLEVELAND — Darius Garland returned from toe surgery Wednesday and helped the Cavaliers rediscover their high-powered offense, pouring in 132 points during a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Garland, back after missing several weeks, said it “was great to be back” while noting the immediate impact of passing to Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Cleveland entered the night ranked 26th in offensive rating after leading the league last season.
Mitchell scored 46 and became the latest Cavalier with 20 or more 40-point games, emphasizing how Garland’s presence eases scoring opportunities. “When you have a guy that can initiate, get the easy shots and make everyone’s job easier, it puts everyone at ease,” Mitchell said.
Interim coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged the offense had looked “clunky” while Garland was sidelined, with players forced into unfamiliar roles. Wednesday’s performance marked a return to last year’s form.
Spurs
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on “NBA Today” that point guard De’Aaron Fox is expected to make his season debut for San Antonio on Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Spurs see Fox and rookie Victor Wembanyama as their long-term core after the pair logged only five games together before Wembanyama was shut down last season.
Fox signed a four-year maximum contract in the offseason. Guard Dylan Harper will miss multiple weeks with a calf strain.
Heat
Second-year wing Pelle Larsson has moved into Erik Spoelstra’s starting lineup and has remained there thanks to efficient shooting and strong all-around play. “He makes you play him because he does so many of the intangible things,” Spoelstra said. “He really elevates the units that he plays in.”
The Heat intend to keep Larsson in the opening five as long as he continues to impact both ends.
