De’Aaron Fox slated for season debut Saturday against Pelicans

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox intends to play his first game of the season on Saturday when the Spurs host the New Orleans Pelicans, according to sources who spoke with ESPN on Friday.

The 27-year-old All-Star spent the offseason recovering from a hamstring injury and increased his workload this week in preparation for his return. His comeback reunites him with Victor Wembanyama; the two shared only five games and 120 total minutes after Fox arrived from Sacramento at last season’s trade deadline.

Fox is the first of several injured Spurs expected back in the near future. Rookie guard Dylan Harper remains sidelined for multiple weeks with a calf strain, while center Luke Kornet continues his recovery from an ankle sprain.

Entering Friday night’s NBA Cup matchup with the Houston Rockets, San Antonio holds a 5-2 record. Fox adds proven production to that start: he is one of only two NBA players—alongside Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic—to average at least 20 points, five assists and one steal in each of the past six seasons.
