The Los Angeles Lakers slipped past the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, winning at Crypto.com Arena behind another standout outing from Luka Doncic.
The 26-year-old guard finished with 35 points, 13 assists, nine rebounds, five steals and two blocks, helping Los Angeles secure a narrow victory. Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama, held below his usual production, contributed 19 points and eight rebounds.
After the game, Doncic highlighted his admiration for the 7-foot-4 Frenchman now in his third NBA season.
“What’s this, his third year in the NBA? And he was playing in the LNB, which is insane,” Doncic said. “I have much respect for him, much love, and I really enjoy his game. Playing against him is tough, guarding him on offense is very tough. I think he’s going to improve more. It’s always fun to play against guys you have so much respect for.”
European Stars at the Forefront
Doncic and Wembanyama are part of a wider European influence atop the league, with four of the game’s top five players currently hailing from the continent. Despite Wednesday’s quieter performance, Wembanyama is averaging 25.6 points, 12.9 rebounds and 4.1 blocks this season and is viewed as the early front-runner for Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Mutual Respect Runs Both Ways
Earlier this season, Wembanyama called Doncic one of the NBA’s toughest players to scout and said he hoped matchups with the Slovenian star would elevate his own play. The two figure to shape the Western Conference landscape for years, provided both remain healthy.
