BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A ballot measure authorizing up to $311 million in venue taxes for a new downtown arena in San Antonio passed on Tuesday, clearing a crucial hurdle for the Spurs’ proposed $1.3 billion project.

County officials said a little more than 52% of voters supported the initiative, which allows local leaders to direct hotel, car-rental and other venue taxes toward construction costs. The Spurs have pledged at least $500 million of their own money, while the City of San Antonio is expected to contribute about $489 million.

The plan remains in its early stages. No construction timeline has been announced, and the club’s lease at Frost Bank Center runs through 2032.

Injury Updates

San Antonio could regain several contributors for Wednesday’s home game against the Lakers. Forward Jeremy Sochan (left wrist sprain), wing Lindy Waters III (bilateral eye procedure) and center Kelly Olynyk (left heel surgery) are all listed as questionable and may make their season debuts, a team spokesperson said.

The Spurs have already been without starting guards De’Aaron Fox (right hamstring strain) and Dylan Harper (left calf strain). Second-year forward Julian Champagnie praised the organization’s cautious approach, noting that the coaching and medical staffs “want us to play basketball for a long time and be healthy for the team ultimately.”

Olynyk’s First Minutes in Silver and Black

Olynyk, traded twice during the offseason before landing in San Antonio, has yet to appear in a game for the Spurs. Head coach Mitch Johnson expects the 12-year veteran’s versatility to mesh well once he is cleared. “He’s seen the whole league … and I think he’ll be someone we can fit with quite a few lineups and will really be able to help us as the season goes on,” Johnson said.

Castle Sets Defensive Target

Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle has set his sights on earning an All-Defensive Team nod in his second season. Johnson assigned the 6-6 guard to the toughest perimeter matchups this fall, calling it “a great opportunity for his versatility” and a chance for Castle “to affect the game as much as anybody.”

The Spurs return to action Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center looking to improve on their 2-5 start and integrate several key pieces back into the rotation.
