Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay offered glowing remarks about Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick after the two met during the NBA off-season.
Appearing on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” McVay said he was struck by Redick’s basketball intellect and willingness to learn.
“JJ’s a guy that’s super smart. The best people I’ve been around listen and learn, and that allows them to lead,” McVay told the show’s panel. “His capacity for the game is so impressive … you can tell there’s an ownership and a security to let his players have input.”
McVay noted that cross-sport conversations help because the two teams are not direct competitors. He added that he has also built relationships with NBA coaches Tyronn Lue, Joe Mazzulla, Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers.
Redick enters Year 2 with higher expectations
Redick, now in his second season on the Lakers’ bench, guided the team to the playoffs last year before a first-round exit. General manager Rob Pelinka retooled the roster by acquiring Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia and Marcus Smart, moves designed to keep the club competitive in a crowded Western Conference while LeBron James recovers from injury.
The former 15-year NBA guard received a contract extension this summer, giving him additional job security as he tries to deliver results with Luka Doncic as the primary option.
Coaching philosophy and season goals
Redick has outlined two main objectives for 2025-26: winning as many games as possible and fostering a workplace where staff enjoy coming to work. The Lakers hope that combination, along with McVay’s off-season guidance, translates into deeper postseason success.
