Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx in his left ring finger and is expected to continue playing while team doctors monitor the injury, according to the club.
The 27-year-old felt discomfort during pregame warmups Wednesday in Boston but suited up anyway in the Cavaliers’ loss to the Celtics. X-rays taken Thursday confirmed the break near the fingertip, an injury that can lead to swelling, bruising, and pain.
Allen is listed as questionable for Friday night’s home game against the Toronto Raptors. Medical staff will re-examine the finger regularly to track pain and swelling. Surgery is not planned at this stage, though that option remains if the condition deteriorates.
The timing is problematic for Cleveland, already without Darius Garland (toe) and Max Strus (foot). Should Allen require time off, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff could look to Dean Wade, Larry Nance Jr., or Thomas Bryant for additional frontcourt minutes.
Through the season’s first five games, Allen is averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. He appeared in all 82 contests and every postseason game a year ago.
