Dallas Mavericks center Anthony Davis was forced out of Wednesday night’s matchup with the Indiana Pacers after experiencing soreness in his lower left leg during the opening quarter.
The eight-time All-Star landed awkwardly following a basket and immediately showed discomfort, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. Dallas summoned a timeout with 4:12 remaining in the period, and Davis headed straight to the locker room for evaluation. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
“He tried to come back in, but we didn’t want to risk anything,” head coach Jason Kidd told reporters, per Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal. “We’ll see how he feels moving forward.”
Davis had appeared on the pregame injury report as probable because of bilateral Achilles tendinopathy but had logged at least 32 minutes in each of Dallas’ first four games. The 32-year-old owns a lengthy injury history: aside from playing 76 games in 2023-24, he has not topped 60 appearances in a season since 2019-20.
Last season, Davis suited up only nine times for the Mavericks after arriving from the Los Angeles Lakers in the trade that sent Luka Dončić to L.A. An adductor strain suffered in his Dallas debut sidelined him for 18 games. The veteran entered this year’s training camp healthy, though he must now wear protective goggles permanently following July surgery to repair a detached retina in his right eye.
Dallas was already shorthanded in the frontcourt on Wednesday. Second-year center Dereck Lively II sat with a right knee sprain, and newly acquired big man Daniel Gafford has yet to play this season because of a sprained right ankle.
