ATLANTA — The Hawks opened the 2025/26 season without new contracts for Trae Young or Kristaps Porzingis after deciding to evaluate the roster before making long-term commitments. Young, speaking to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, said he is “not worried” about negotiations and is focused on winning, noting, “If we win, everybody eats.”
Atlanta got Jalen Johnson (right ankle sprain), Porzingis (flu-like symptoms) and rookie Zaccharie Risacher (right ankle sprain) back in Monday’s lineup, but fell 128-123 to the Bulls and slipped to 1-3. Young expressed excitement about teaming with Porzingis, a stretch 5 who can “spread the five man out to 30 feet,” and hopes to generate more catch-and-shoot opportunities this season.
Magic looking to balance pace and defense
Orlando also stumbled out of the gate, dropping a third straight game Monday. The Athletic’s Josh Robbins and The Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede questioned whether the revamped roster can play faster while keeping its defensive edge. “I think you can do both,” guard Jalen Suggs said, emphasizing detailed effort on the glass and quick recovery on defense.
Miller seeks second opinion
Hornets forward Brandon Miller is obtaining another medical opinion on his left shoulder subluxation, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on NBA TV. Surgery or rehab remain options as Charlotte and the former No. 2 overall pick determine the best course of action.
Heat examine Terry Rozier trade fallout
The Heat are exploring whether they deserve compensation for not being told of an NBA investigation into unusual betting involving Terry Rozier before trading for him in January 2024. ESPN’s Bobby Marks told The Miami Herald the matter is unprecedented and said Miami is “highly unlikely” to regain the protected first-round pick sent to Charlotte. The Hornets have not indicated whether they were aware of the investigation at the time of the deal.
