PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers needed six days this season to reach a third victory, a stark contrast to last year’s month-long wait. Behind a blistering start from guards Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia beat the Orlando Magic 136-124 on Monday night to move to 3-0.
Maxey poured in 43 points and handed out eight assists, while Edgecombe delivered 26 points and seven assists. Their combined 182 points through three games are the most by any starting backcourt to open a season since the NBA began tracking starters in 1970-71, according to ESPN Research.
“You look down and ask, ‘Who didn’t help us tonight?’” head coach Nick Nurse said. “You couldn’t say anybody.”
Rookie Impact
Edgecombe, selected third overall after the Sixers retained their top-six-protected pick, is averaging 25 points on 50% shooting and 40% from beyond the arc. “I’m a student of the game, so I know where my buckets will come from,” the 19-year-old said.
Veteran Leadership
Maxey, who teamed with Edgecombe for the historic scoring mark, emphasized winning above all. “I want us to be really good as a team, and I know that starts with me,” he said.
Supporting Cast and Injuries
Kelly Oubre Jr. added 25 points and 10 rebounds Monday while frequently guarding Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, who finished with 32 points. The Sixers played without Paul George (knee), Jared McCain (thumb), Trendon Watford (hamstring) and Dominick Barlow (elbow). Joel Embiid rested in sweats but is scheduled to play Tuesday in Washington, the second night of a back-to-back.
Last season’s 24-58 campaign is fading quickly as Philadelphia establishes a fast-paced, guard-driven identity. Even with injuries and Embiid’s minute restrictions, the Sixers have emerged as one of the league’s early surprises.
