NEW YORK — The NBA on Monday selected San Antonio Spurs forward-center Victor Wembanyama and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo as the season’s first Players of the Week.
Western Conference: Wembanyama
The 7-foot-4 Frenchman earned the honor after steering San Antonio to a 3-0 start. Over those games, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft averaged 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 6.0 blocks. He shot 56.9 percent from the floor, 36.4 percent from long range and 73.3 percent at the foul line while committing just 0.7 turnovers per contest. It is the second weekly award of his young career.
Eastern Conference: Antetokounmpo
Antetokounmpo captured the Eastern Conference nod by posting 36.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.0 block as Milwaukee went 2-1. The two-time MVP converted 68.3 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 66.7 percent from three-point territory, and shot 62.9 percent on free throws. The recognition is the 28th of his career. According to the Bucks, he is the first player in league history to collect at least 100 points, 40 rebounds and 15 assists through the first three games of a season.
Other nominees
Western Conference candidates included Stephen Curry (Warriors), Luka Dončić (Mavericks), Austin Reaves (Lakers) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder). In the East, LaMelo Ball (Hornets), Jalen Brunson (Knicks), VJ Edgecombe (Heat), Tyrese Maxey (76ers), Donovan Mitchell (Cavaliers) and Norman Powell (Raptors) were also considered.
The league will continue announcing weekly winners throughout the regular season.
