MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without All-Star guard Anthony Edwards for approximately two weeks after tests confirmed a right hamstring strain, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
Edwards exited Sunday’s matchup with the Indiana Pacers after just three minutes, clutching his leg and failing to return. The club initially labeled the issue as “tightness,” but subsequent imaging revealed the strain.
The injury pauses a fast start for the 22-year-old, who poured in 41 points last week against Portland and 31 against the Lakers as Minnesota’s offense continued to lean heavily on his shot creation and physicality.
Minnesota plays the Denver Nuggets tonight to complete a back-to-back and has seven additional games over the next two weeks. Edwards is likely to miss at least eight contests before being re-evaluated.
In Sunday’s loss to Indiana, forward Julius Randle assumed the primary scoring responsibilities, while Mike Conley, Jaylen Clark, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Bones Hyland all logged expanded minutes off the bench. Head coach Chris Finch is expected to employ a committee approach to offset the absence of his leading scorer.
Durability had been one of Edwards’ trademarks: he appeared in 79 games in each of the past three seasons and 72 in each of his first two years in the league. Minnesota must now navigate the Western Conference race without its top offensive engine for the first significant stretch of his career.
