The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without star guard Anthony Edwards for approximately two weeks after he was diagnosed with a right hamstring strain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Edwards left Sunday’s matchup against the Indiana Pacers after just three minutes when he felt tightness in the same hamstring. Team medical staff later confirmed the strain.
The injury halts a fast start to the season for the 23-year-old, who scored 41 points in a season-opening win over Portland and 31 points in a loss to the Lakers. Minnesota faces Denver on Monday night in the second game of a back-to-back and plays seven additional games during the projected recovery window, meaning Edwards is expected to miss at least eight contests.
With Edwards sidelined on Sunday, forward Julius Randle assumed the primary scoring role, while guards and wings Mike Conley, Jaylen Clark, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Bones Hyland all logged double-digit minutes off the bench. Head coach Chris Finch indicated that filling Edwards’ minutes will likely involve a committee approach.
Durability has been a hallmark of Edwards’ career to date; he appeared in 79 games in each of the past three seasons after playing 72 in both of his first two NBA campaigns. The Timberwolves will now look to navigate their upcoming schedule without their leading scorer.
