Luka Doncic is off to a historic start, pouring in 92 points across the Los Angeles Lakers’ first two games, the highest two-game opening total in franchise history. The guard erupted for 49 points in 35 minutes during Friday’s 129-112 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena, prompting “MVP” chants from the home crowd.

“He, of course, dominates the whole game so easily,” forward Rui Hachimura told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin after the win. “And it’s not some random team we played against. They’re a Western Conference Finals team. So this is crazy.”

Minnesota eliminated Los Angeles in last season’s first round, but Doncic said revenge was not on his mind. “I just want to forget about last season,” he said. “I don’t really think about that first-round series.”

Smart’s Defensive Spark

Veteran guard Marcus Smart, who signed a two-year deal in July following a buyout with Washington, delivered his trademark energy and defense on Friday. He finished plus-24 in 26 minutes despite modest counting stats. “My stats aren’t going to do me any justice, so I try not to worry about it,” Smart told the Los Angeles Times. “It definitely shows the impact that can be made without touching the ball.”

Early-Season Rotation

Head coach JJ Redick has opened both contests with the same five: Deandre Ayton, Doncic, Gabe Vincent, Austin Reaves and Hachimura. Rookie wing Dalton Knecht entered the first-half rotation Friday after not playing in the opener.

Hayes Sidelined

Reserve center Jaxson Hayes was held out Friday due to left knee soreness. He logged 14 minutes in the season opener against Golden State and is listed as day-to-day.

Betting Inquiry Involving Former Assistant

Separately, former NBA player and coach Damon Jones is alleged to have provided gamblers with inside information about LeBron James’ availability for two games during the 2022-23 season. According to The Athletic, James was unaware that a longtime acquaintance was passing along details about him and the team.
