Assistant coach Tiago Splitter will take over the Portland Trail Blazers’ bench after the NBA placed Chauncey Billups on leave, according to Hoops Rumors.
The change comes amid an illegal gambling investigation that led to Billups’ arrest earlier in the day. With Billups temporarily sidelined, Splitter moves up from the assistant ranks to guide the club on an interim basis.
Splitter, a former NBA center who joined Portland’s coaching staff after ending his playing career, has worked primarily in player development. This assignment marks his first opportunity as an NBA head coach.
The Trail Blazers have not announced whether the appointment could extend beyond the current investigation or provided a timetable for Billups’ potential return.
