New York’s NBA teams opened the 2025/26 campaign with very different storylines. The Knicks are still waiting for starting center Mitchell Robinson, while the Nets saw rookie Egor Demin and guard Cam Thomas take the floor after notable off-season developments. Former Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau also resurfaced in reports explaining his June departure.
Robinson sidelined by load management
Head coach Mike Brown confirmed there is no target date for Robinson’s first regular-season appearance. The 27-year-old played only the first half of New York’s Oct. 9 preseason game, and the club has since labeled his absence “load management” despite no formal injury listing. Brown said decisions on Robinson’s availability could come in blocks—possibly two games, possibly five—depending on conversations with the medical staff and front office. He added that Robinson may miss practices or games even if he is physically able to participate.
Why Thibodeau is gone
The Athletic reported that the Knicks’ decision to dismiss Thibodeau after one of their best seasons in years stemmed from a philosophical divide with upper management. According to the story, some executives focused more on his shortcomings than his successes, leaving the veteran coach feeling betrayed by colleagues he once supported.
Demin gains strength for Nets debut
Nets first-round pick Egor Demin spent the summer rehabbing plantar fasciitis and added more than 10 pounds of muscle. The 19-year-old told the New York Post he wanted extra strength to compete on both ends of the floor while maintaining his conditioning. Demin came off the bench in Brooklyn’s season opener against Charlotte.
Thomas keeps contract worries at bay
After an extended stint in restricted free agency, Cam Thomas accepted Brooklyn’s qualifying offer and returned on a one-year deal. Speaking with reporters, the 23-year-old said he is focused solely on playing after an injury-shortened 2024/25 season and is comfortable letting future negotiations unfold on their own.
The Knicks continue a three-game homestand Friday, while the Nets travel to Detroit for their second game of the week.
